Opis

In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a race of female warriors noted for their riding skills, as well as their courage and pride, who lived at the outer limits of the known world, sometimes specifically mentioning the city of Themyscira on the Black Sea. Their queen was Hippolyta, and although Homer tells us that they were „equal to men”, the most famous of them fought and lost in battle against three Greek heroes: Hercules, Theseus and Bellerophon. Scenes of these battles were popular in Greek art, especially in the pottery and monumental statuary that adorned some of the most important buildings in the Greek world, including the Parthenon in Athens. Interestingly, archaeological research of tombs in Eurasia has shown conclusively that many women of the nomadic tribes of the steppes were indeed warriors, particularly in the Black Sea area.
