Valkyries, powerful women, brave warriors, beautiful and of great strength, charged with protecting the gods and beings of all the worlds of Scandinavian mythology (Asgard, Midgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim, Svartalfheim, Muspellheim, Jotunheim, Nifelheim and Helheim). They rode through the skies of these worlds on great winged horses, dressed in shining and beautiful armour woven by the gods of Asgard and wielding great spears and swords.
The Valkyries actually acted under Freya, the goddess of love and fertility, but they had their own queen, Brunhild, who led this army. She was also the most powerful Valkyrie of them all, her strength was greater than that of 12 men combined.
Her army consisted of numerous Valkyries who always accompanied her. The best known are; Mista, Rista, Hilda, Thruda, Sigrún, Hlök, Herfjoten, Ragyd, Gud, Skogul, Hund and Hnos.
The mission of the Valkyries, apart from defending and protecting, was to seek out the fallen Viking warriors, the einjerher, and accompany them to Valhalla where they would be rewarded for their bravery and honour with a life of comfort, peace and women while drinking mead and eating delicacies fit for the gods.
Another power of the Valkyries was their healing abilities, which they used to help the wounded Einjerher who were not yet ready to leave the world of men.
